How to Learn a Language

This course is not a language course — it is a course about how language learning works. Before you study French, Spanish, Arabic, or any other language, understanding how the brain acquires language, what methods are most effective, and how to build a sustainable learning system will make everything that follows faster and more durable.

What you will learn

  • Understand how the brain acquires and retains language
  • Choose the right method for your goal and learning style
  • Build a spaced repetition vocabulary system
  • Develop a reading practice that scales from beginner to advanced
  • Start speaking earlier and with less anxiety
  • Understand grammar as a pattern-recognition skill, not a memorisation exercise
  • Use immersion effectively, even without travelling
  • Recognise when you are making progress and when you are stuck
  • Apply these principles to any specific language
Chapters in progress Ten chapters are planned covering acquisition science, vocabulary building, phonics and sound systems, reading from week one, grammar as pattern recognition, speaking before you're ready, listening comprehension, immersion without travel, building the habit, and reaching advanced fluency. They will appear here as they are completed.
